Before the advent of the Europeans, the Cherokee claimed all land west of the Catawba River; the Catawba Indians claimed the land immediately east of the river.  By the end of the Revolutionary War, the Cherokee had been pushed south and west into the southernmost Appalachians and the Catawbas into South Carolina.
